Highlander: The Gathering

There can be only one.

So, I was reading about Henry Cavill's upcoming Highlander reboot, got a bit nostalgic, and thought... why the hell isn't there a 16-bit Highlander game?

And naturally, rather than just getting on with my day, I decided to make one.

I've always loved Highlander. I've also got a soft spot for the days of 16-bit gaming, when you bought a game, switched it on and were expected to figure the bloody thing out yourself.

It's a small, retro-inspired action game built for the fun of it. No grand ambitions, no monetisation, and absolutely no interest in turning it into the next big thing.

Just an excuse to revisit something I grew up loving and see if I could turn it into a playable game.

No tutorials. Welcome to 16-bit gaming.

That's pretty much the philosophy here. Play it, work things out, get better. The game isn't going to stop every five minutes to explain what a button does.

If you've played games from that era, you'll know exactly what I mean.

Why make it?

Because I could.

Most of my projects start with some ridiculous idea that I want to see working. This one's no different.

I enjoyed building it, a couple of friends enjoyed playing it (including someone who normally hates games!), and now I'm throwing it onto itch.io in case somebody else fancies giving it a go.

It's free. Have fun with it.

There can be only one.
